Transmission Engineer (UK)

Overall Purpose of Job
Epsilon operates a transmission network leveraging Fiber, DWDM, OTN and SDH technologies. This role is responsible for the design, planning and support of these elements of the Epsilon backbone network. 

Key Responsibilities
DESIGN
  • Ensure transmission network is designed to support 99.999% uptime
  • Ease of network provisioning and support is important. This role is responsible for designing the network with ease of provisioning and troubleshooting in mind
  • Participate in hardware/vendor selection process
  • Provide guidance to the procurement team in the leased capacity selection process to ensure appropriate diversity is achieved
  • Cost control is crucial and needs to be part of all design decisions
  • Maintain adequate documentation of network topology and inventory, creating such documentation when it is found to be missing

PLANNING
  • Available network capacity has to be kept at appropriate levels. This individual must work closely with the capacity management and formulate plans to increase or decrease available network capacity as needed to meet target thresholds
  • When new opportunities arrive which exceed available network capacities, the engineer is responsible for quickly assessing the ideal solution to solve the requirement in the most efficient manner
  • The implementation of network planning changes requires operational involvement. This includes (but is not limited to) equipment configuration, cabling/installation task creation and final testing

SUPPORT
  • Serve as Tier 3 Escalation in all network fault and customer support matters
  • Participate in on-call rotation
  • Maintain documentation as needed to support the provisioning and SMC teams with service deployment and fault management process guidance.
  • Advise technical sales and provisioning teams as needed with complex service deployment solutions
  • Liaise with product team to ensure network design and product service definition are in alignment

Job Requirements
  •  Strong skills with the following transmission technologies; Fiber-Optics, DWDM, ROADM, OTN and SDH. These skills include design, operations and troubleshooting
  • Understanding of protection schemes in use by such networks
  • Clear comprehension of the nature of hierarchical multiplexing in use by optical transmission networks
  • Appreciation for facility infrastructure and field implementation work
  • Working with troubleshooting methods, tools and resources
  • Transmission network management throughout the entire lifecycle from planning through decommissioning
  • Familiarity with network management systems
  • Proficient with the use of Microsoft Visio and other Office Applications
  • Working knowledge of the following platforms considered a plus;
    • Alcatel-Lucent/Nokia 1350 OMS
    • Alcatel-Lucent 16xx SDH platforms
    • Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS
    • Juniper BTI 7200 and 7800 optical transport products
    • Juniper BTI ProNX Service Manager (PSM)
    • Ekinops 360 Portfolio
    • Ekinops Celestis Management Platform
    • PRTG, CheckMK, Solarwinds and other SNMP management systems
